Lurking in the Lake District: Spooktacular Halloween Events this October

The spookiest time of the year is almost upon us! With its enchanting yet mysterious scenery, from spooky forests to secluded lakes, The Lake District is ideal for a Halloween getaway.

Cumbria is particularly creepy at Halloween, with many haunted castles, towering waterfalls, freaky mists, ominous mountain peaks and pitch-black nights to uncover. The county is plagued by tales of ghosts, monsters, and mythical creatures – many of which are very close to home here at Long Valley Yurts.

Ghastly Ghost Walks at Keswick

As John Brown once remarked, “the full perfection of Keswick consists of 3 qualities: beauty, immensity and horror.” Keswick is a town with a history of murder and tortured souls. From slate-built houses to mysterious lakes and fells, Keswick is steeped in legend and mystery. Uncover Keswick’s deepest, darkest secrets on this series of ghost walks, and follow The Lady if you dare…

Walks begin and end at The Moot Hall in Keswick on selected dates throughout October; just 25 minutes from our Keswick site. Tickets cost £10 for adults and £8 for concessions and must be booked in advance.

 

Twilight Tales at Dove Cottage

Take the kids out for hot chocolate, gingerbread, and Halloween crafts in this cosy learning space. With traditional Georgian costumes to dress up in, interesting and interactive talks about the Wordsworth’s, and spooky Cumbrian stories to enjoy, you’re guaranteed a fun family evening out this October.

This event will be held at the learning space in Wordsworth Grasmere on Wednesday 27th October at 4pm; just 40 minutes from our Ullswater site. Tickets cost £12 per families, with activities suitable for children aged 3+. Please email education@wordsworth.org.uk to book.

 

Horrifying Halloween at Brockhole-on-Windermere

True Halloween horror is due to descend on Brockhole this October. There are over 18 fun family activities on site, including the Haunted Forest, the Giant Pumpkin Trail, Halloween Arts & “Witch” Crafts, the Tent of Terror, Zombie Archery, Spider Laser Clay, a Halloween Magic Show and much more. Each child also receives a FREE pumpkin to take home with them.

This event will be held at Brockhole-on-Windermere from 20th-31st October; just 30 minutes from our Windermere site. Tickets cost £26 for children and £16 for adults and must be pre-booked in advance.

 

Eerie Entertainment at Muncaster Castle

Head to one of Britain’s most haunted castles for a full week of seriously spooky events. There are oodles of activities to enjoy, including the Scary Maze, fire juggling shows, alchemy workshops, kid’s crafts and even axe throwing! There are also two extra special shows on offer: the “Emporium of Stolen Souls” castle show and the terrific Twilight Owl show.

Gruesome Ghost Tours at Carlisle Castle

Uncover the dark secrets lurking in Carlisle Castle this Halloween. Expert storytellers will take you on a bone-chilling journey through the past, sharing terrifying tales of ghastly ghosts, supernatural sightings, and horrifying histories. This gruesome ghost tour is certainly not a night for the faint hearted!

Tours are held at Carlisle Castle from 28th-31st October at 7pm and 8.30pm; just 40 minutes from our Keswick site. Tickets cost £12.50 for English Heritage members and £17.50 for non-members and must be booked in advance. Suitable for ages 16+.

 

Frightening Fun at Holker Hall

Whisk the kids away to Holker Hall for a whole weekend of Halloween fun. On Saturday 30th October, you can become a witch or wizard for the day and help the team of sorcerers solve magical problems at “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. Throughout the weekend, you can head out to the gardens and embark upon the pumpkin trail, following the clues to find the hidden pumpkins.

This event will be held at Holker Hall on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st October; just 20 minutes from our Windermere site. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tickets cost £15 per child which includes 1 accompanying adult – click here to buy. The pumpkin trail is FREE for children and costs £9 per adult.

 

Spine-Chilling Spectacular at Woolly Farm

For some freaky farmyard fun this October, look no further than Woolly Farm. Begin your adventure in the barn and meet the animals, before crafting your very own jack o’ lantern at the carving station. Embark upon the scarecrow scavenger hunt, gathering the clues to find the spooky scarecrows. Get lost in their new maize maze or take on the TERROR maze if you’re brave enough!

Terrifying Team Challenge at Watchtree Nature Reserve

This one’s for the adults! A series of teams will compete to uncover the location of all the creepy checkpoints in this nightmarish nature reserve. Taking place during the dark, you are guaranteed to be scared out of your wits by the Watchtree’s fearsome ghouls (real actors intent on frightening you). All participants will receive a medal and goodie bag, with prizes given for the winning team.

This event will be held at Watchtree Nature Reserve on Saturday 30th October at 6.30pm; just 35 minutes from our Keswick site. Tickets cost £16.76 each and participants must be in teams of 2-6 people – click here to buy. Suitable for adults aged 18+, with no children or spectators allowed.

 

PYO Pumpkins in Creepy Cumbria

Pumpkin picking is a great activity for both adults and children to enjoy. Head to our recommended PYO pumpkin patches to create the jack o’ lantern of your dreams…

Lakeland Maze Farm Park’s pumpkin patch is just 15 minutes from our Windermere site. You can pick your own pumpkin from 9th-31st October, with pumpkins individuals priced depending on their size. Tickets must be pre-booked in advance.

Pagebank Farm’s pumpkin patch is just 35 minutes from our Coniston site. They have an abundance of pumpkins to choose from, as well as various Halloween attractions to enjoy during October weekends and the half-term week. Tickets are FREE – however, you must book an admission slot.

Walby Farm Park’s pumpkin patch is just 50 minutes from our Keswick site. Take the little ones to the mini pumpkin picking event during October weekdays or enjoy the main event during the half-term week. Tickets cost £11.95 per adult and £14.45 per child, with a FREE pumpkin for every child.
