Innominate Tarn, Haystack

The ‘unnamed’ tarn below Haystacks (597m) is where Alfred Wainright’s ashes are scattered. It’s small but perfectly formed, with craggy outcrops and wonderful views, but it’s fairly shallow and has quite deep sediment in places. Nearby Blackbeck Tarn is better for a proper swim, but also has sediment.

Directions: Several well-marked paths lead to the top of Haystacks from many starting points (it’s a very popular climb). Set off from Gatesgarth Farm car park on the B5289  or Honister slate mine (11⁄2 miles W of CA12 5XN).
