Cautley Spout, Waterfall
The high falls of Cautley Spout were formed when glaciers carved into the mountainside, eventually diverting a north-flowing stream, Swere Gill, over the edge of Cautley Crag. There are no plunge pools here, but it’s an impressive cascade nonetheless.
Directions: Follow the bridleway over river from beside the Cross Keys Temperance Inn (A683 just NE of LA10 5NE, 015396 20284) and the footpath up the beck where the river bends, all about 11⁄2 miles. Adventurers might also like to explore two more sets of waterfalls off A683 to the S: deep within Hebblethwaite Hall Gill and beyond Thursgill hamlet.
