What is a Yurt

Yurts in Cumbria
A Yurt is a self-supporting structure made of a wooden frame and a canvas cover. The word ‘Yurt’ means a small dwelling, designed to be transported from place to place with ease. In Mongolia it is known as a ‘Ger’ or a ‘Boyuz’ in Kyrgystan.

There are a number of variants of Yurts but fundamentally they all share the same circular shape, trellis walls and roof poles radiating out from the large central wheel, also known as a ’Crown’.

The shape of the yurt is very thermally efficient. A large yurt can easily be kept warm using a small wood burning stove in temperatures well below zero without any additional insulation.
